Microsoft scores 120,000 USDA users in massive cloud win
It's a nice feather in the cap of Microsoft, which only earlier this month received its Authorization to Operate from the Fed. Microsoft V.P. Curt Kolcun believes the USDA deal will get the ball rolling, saying "Nearly every federal agency trusts their productivity needs to Microsoft Office, Exchange, and SharePoint today." He continued, "From a momentum perspective, I think this announcement is going to be a phenomenal catalyst to drive more interest from the federal CIO community to think about moving their full messaging suite applications to the cloud with Microsoft."
... And so the battle for the cloud continues. Your move, Google!Microsoft scores 120,000 USDA users in massive cloud win originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opera Mobile will support Flash and HTML5 video... soon
The interesting thing is, Pavel doesn't say that Flash and HTML5 support are only coming to Android; in fact, he says "if you have Flash player installed on your phone, Opera will support it." Now, it's not like Flash actually runs on many mobile phones, but it still leaves some interesting possibilities open -- will it support Flash Lite for Symbian, for example? For now, though, only Android 2.1 and newer has access to an official Flash player. HTML5 video support, on the other hand, is far less exciting -- in fact, most mobile browsers, including the upcoming Firefox for Mobile, already support it. Opera Mobile is actually playing catch-up in that regard.
Beyond the Flash and HTML5 news, Pavel talks about the trials and tribulations of writing apps for Android. Unlike Symbian, the operating system behind Nokia phones, Android is very young, very fresh, and prone to rapid changes that developers sometimes struggle to stay on top of. The trade-off, of course, is that Android is accruing exciting features, and thus apps and users, at break-neck speeds.Opera Mobile will support Flash and HTML5 video... soon originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 06:30:00 EST. Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows
And it's just gotten better, with the official arrival of Security Essentials 2. The upgrade adds several key improvements, not the least of which is a heuristic scanning engine. One of the big knocks against its predecessor was that MSE's protection relied too heavily upon definitions -- and in today's ever-changing threat landscape, definitions just aren't enough. Still, I never had a single machine at home become infected while running MSE 1, so now that version 2 includes heuristic kung-fu I'm even less concerned about the safety of my Windows PCs.
MSE 2 also offers improved defense by better integrating with existing Windows features. The updated app adds muscle to the Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer to offer increased protection against network and Web-based threats. There's also a new network inspection feature which uses the Windows Filtering Platform in Vista and Windows 7 -- XP users won't benefit from this feature, obviously.
If you're already running MSE, check your update tab for an upgrade notification -- your system tray icon may also be orange if the update is available. You can also download Security Essentials 2 manually from this page and install over the old version.Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 07:30:00 EST. Does the Netbook Have a Life?
Use the old Windows XP screensavers, including Aquarium, with Windows Vista and 7
With Windows Vista, these XP gems were summarily broken. Most of us didn't realize, as we were too busy dealing with Vista's despicable, retentive ineptitude, but now that we're onto Windows 7... well, wouldn't it be nice to relive some of those nice Windows XP experiences?
One clever guy on the WinMatrix forums (back in 2009, it must be said) has ported the Windows XP screensavers to work with Vista and 7. Unfortunately, Windows Dancer has been removed for copyright reasons, but the Original Screensavers pack (including Aquarium) is still available! Once you've unzipped it, you should have an EXE called MCE2005Screensavers.exe. I chose to unzip that file (using 7-Zip), as I don't like running EXEs, but many people have attested that the file is free of viruses.
You should then have a directory full of screensaver (.SCR) files. Right click your favorite and Install. It seemed a little buggy, with some screensavers requiring multiple Installs before they finally worked. But as you can see above, the Aquarium definitely works on Windows 7.Use the old Windows XP screensavers, including Aquarium, with Windows Vista and 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 11:10:00 EST. Panelize fixes one of Chrome OS's fundamental flaws
Chrome OS does support one way of displaying multiple Web pages at the same time, however: panels. If you've looked through our Chromium OS galleries (or taken a quick look at the screenshot above) you'll notice some always-on-top panels across the bottom of the screen. Panels are handy things -- capable of being resized, or quickly popped down out of view. By default, the download manager, popped-out Gmail chat windows and the media player display in panels -- but, for some reason, there's no way to load custom websites in panels.
Which brings us onto our very first Chrome OS-specific extension: Panelize. With Panelize you can put anything into a panel, such as Gmail, Reader, or even Download Squad. In one fell swoop, having to switch between tabs is a thing of the past!Continue reading Panelize fixes one of Chrome OS's fundamental flawsPanelize fixes one of Chrome OS's fundamental flaws originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 12 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. Why Richard Stallman Takes No Shine to Chrome
New York Times Chrome Web app hands-on: jaw-droppingly awesome
Take a look at the New York Times Web app, which I've just had the immense pleasure of playing around with. Notice how I gave you a Chrome Web Store link, but I could just as easily tell you to visit http://www.nytimes.com/chrome/# in Firefox 4 and it still works. Heck, it works in Firefox 3, too.
Don't let the 'oooh, Web app!!' distract you from the real gems, though. The layout is nothing like the website, and that's a good thing. Never has it been easier to switch between categories quickly -- seriously, the Web app blows the website out of the water, as far as content discovery goes. Then, there's the keyboard shortcuts, with the arrow keys allowing you to whisk through pages and stories with incredible ease.
Finally, and perhaps the best example of why Web apps are the wave of the future: visit the Web app's URL on your iPad. The experience is better than the actual iPad app. Even swiping works! (There are some iPad screenshots in the gallery below, too.)
Anyway, the best way to get to grips with the New York Times Web app is to play around with it yourself. If you don't have time, or if you're afraid of missing the good bits, have a look through our hands-on gallery below (again, make sure you view the images 'full size'). My initial impressions are excellent -- but the app is far from perfect. More analysis after the break.

Pre-launch Chrome OS hands-on; analysis and screenshots
Even if Chrome OS is shown off tomorrow, it's could be a matter of weeks ormonths until you get your hands on a Chrome OS netbook (or smartbook). That's why we've created a new gallery which showcases the new OS and walks you through all of the new features. Just so it's clear: this is Chromium OS, Chrome OS's open source brother. I've been told by a couple of Googlers that the public and private repositories aren't very different, however.
Some important bits are still missing -- most obviously Cloud Print -- and a lot of key features still remain hidden behind the about:flags barricade. Fundamental features such as the media player and support for USB and SD card storage are still considered 'experimental'. In fact, while the browser itself is as excellent as always, most of the OS-specific bits seem to be a bit flaky.
In the gallery, I've tried to highlight bits that we haven't shown before, such as the keyboard overlays and user management. Note that the docking Gmail chat manager is back, but that Picasa integration is still ominously missing. The coolest bit is that Chromium OS, like its browser brother, now seems to have developer and beta channels -- but it isn't functional yet.
Once you've browsed through it, you'll likely reach the same conclusion as me: Unless Google has held back a lot of non-public code, Chrome OS simply isn't ready for launch. Tomorrow will almost certainly be a demonstration of an internal build of Chrome OS, or just the launch of the Web Store.Continue reading Pre-launch Chrome OS hands-on; analysis and screenshotsPre-launch Chrome OS hands-on; analysis and screenshots originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack
One of the biggest lessons to be learned from the Gawker fiasco is this: don't use the same password everywhere.
But remembering all those different passwords is hard, yo!
Yes, it is -- but there are secure tools you can use which make it so you don't have to do the remembering yourself. Apps like LastPass, OnePassword, and KeePass make creating and utilizing complex, secure passwords a trivial task. All you need to do is pick an app, create an account, and set up one really good password you can remember to protect it. Your password manager will take care of the memorizing.
Take the jump to see how easy it can be to better protect your logins online!Continue reading Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hackThree password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. No Spotify in the U.S. this year, label deals still up in the air
In truth, Spotify is not close to closing deals with U.S. record labels. Apple was thought to be protracting Spotify's problems by playing on record industry fears of falling profits and painting the service in a bad light. Spotify has nearly 750,000 subscribers each paying $10 per month for the service, though, and the global online music biz is worth anywhere between $15 and $40 billion U.S. -- so it's unlikely that the labels won't get on board eventually. Even if profits from Spotify are comparatively small, they're better than any income when a potential listener grabs a P2P share instead of firing up a streaming app like Spotify.
When is this going to happen? Spotify CEO Daniel Ek could only say "We are definitely going to do the U.S., you'll see." But added, "I can't commit to a specific date."No Spotify in the U.S. this year, label deals still up in the air originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 10:30:00 EST. Send hilarious, personalized Santa messages with Google Voice
Today, things just got a whole lot easier. If you want to create a personalized message for a (younger) special someone, there's the Google Voice-powered Send A Personalized Call From Santa. Once you're done, you can send it as a phone call (in the US only, alas), by email, or simply grab a URL.
Check out my message from Santa if you want to hear a sample of what this piece of awesomeness can produce. I love how it correctly synthesizes my name.

Google has focused on the discussions aspect of Groups first -- so while finding new groups and creating new topics has a shiny new UI, you will have to return to the old interface to perform administrative tasks. Check the New Groups vs. Old Groups page for more info.
As TechCrunch's Siegler mentions, the new style feels more than a little like Wave. With Wave's retirement, the redistribution of its team members, and Google's re-use of JavaScript libraries (and thus UI elements), it's safe to assume that some of Wave might have ended up in Groups. Google Chrome Canary hits v10, Crankshaft turbocharges V8 JavaScript engine
Crankshaft is made up of four components:
a runtime profiler for identifying code that uses a significant number of CPU cycles
a base compiler for generating code more quickly
an optimizing compiler which re-compiles code pinpointed by the profiler
deoptimization mechanism that allows Crankshaft to recover from overly-optimistic code optimizations
Crankshaft offers improvements in both startup time and maximum performance, with Google noting gains of up to 12% on JavaScript-heavy pages. On Google's own V8 benchmark, Crankshaft helps Chrome post scores which are almost 50% higher than previous versions with V8 alone.
...And for those of you wondering when Chrome was going to hit version ten, you've got your answer. Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and the Nexus S announced by Google
If you're feeling brave, dive right into the Android 2.3 Platform Highlights. It's aimed at developers, but most of the main features are spelled out in plain English. Here's a taster:
Faster, more intuitive text input -- the default keyboard has been significantly improved, and multi-touch 'key-chording' means faster input
UI refinements for simplicity and speed -- the UI has been simplified, with menus and settings now easier to find. It looks like the whole thing will be quite bold and 'primary colored'
One-touch word selection and copy/paste -- this one's quite hard to explain, better to look at the two pictures
Improved power management -- apps will be automatically closed if they steal a lot of CPU time, and users can now see at a glance which phone components and apps are taking up the most power
More ways to communicate -- Internet calling (VoIP/SIP), Near Field Communication and video calling with the front-facing camera are now possible
There's lots of other low-level changes, but I won't bore you with them. It's safe to say that, as I write this, app developers the world over are drooling on their hairy feet. To put it another way, that Sony PlayStation phone that you've seen on Engadget -- it's only possible because of some big changes in Android 2.3's architecture.
With regards to availability, Gingerbread will be open-sourced in the next few weeks. The Nexus S will be available to buy in the US from December 16, and in the UK from the 20th.
There are videos of the phone itself, and some developers getting their nerd on, after the break.Continue reading Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and the Nexus S announced by GoogleAndroid 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and the Nexus S announced by Google originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 11:40:00 EST. Google Cloud Print is now available
Your Cloud Print queue manager will display all the printers you've got installed on your computer, along with any active and recently completed print jobs. When you hover over a printer, a drop-down appears which enables you to share or delete the printer from Cloud Print.

3-way hardware accelerated browser rematch: Internet Explorer 9 finally on top (video)
In the last five months, all three browsers have been maturing. Chrome has leapfrogged from version 7 to 9, Firefox has been working frantically on its JavaScript engine to catch Chrome, and Internet Explorer 9 has been quietly -- but confidently -- working behind the scenes on the entire package. The emergence of new features has all but ceased: all three vendors are now readying themselves for an epic market share battle at the start of 2011.
The good news is, at least for the users, is that all three browsers are very fast. All three browsers have significantly improved since August, both in speed and standards-compliance, and it's now clear that you'll enjoy the Web no matter your browser. The only real question mark hovers over Opera -- version 11 is meant to be hardware accelerated, but until we actually see it, who knows.
In this new deathmatch, there is no run-away winner. Firefox 4 certainly looks like the slowest of the three, and Chrome -- dirty, pulls-no-punches Chrome -- is definitely faster, but I still don't think it matches the shiny, smooth slickness of Microsoft's newest browser. Internet Explorer 9, if you watch its side-by-side performance and figure in its excellent results from other benchmarks, must surely be the current king of HTML5-enabled, hardware-accelerated browsers.Continue reading 3-way hardware accelerated browser rematch: Internet Explorer 9 finally on top (video)3-way hardware accelerated browser rematch: Internet Explorer 9 finally on top (video) originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects
Using OpenKinect as an interface, OpenCV to process the captured images, CMU Sphinx to recognize speech and Festvox to synthesize speech, one hacker was able to create a program that recognizes random real-world objects and communicates with a user in real time. He notes in the video's description that it's just a 'proof of concept', but one wonders how long it actually took him to cobble it together because the video was uploaded only a few days after OpenKinect's release.
The most exciting prospect though, in my opinion, is that Microsoft must surely be working on their own in-house tools (and games!) to better utilize Kinect's potential. The cocky work of lone cowboy coders is one thing, but next-generation interfaces from powerhouses like Microsoft are something else.Continue reading Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objectsHacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. Google Wave looks set to be rescued by Apache
The beleaguered Wave project, which Google has ceased developing, will soon shut down. Last week, Google gave us the ability to export our existing waves as Zip files, and now, thanks to Apache and the Wave in a Box off-shoot, you may soon have somewhere to import them to. It won't be exactly the same as Google Wave, but it could be pretty damn close.
The Register is reporting that the Apache Software Group is looking to roll Wave in a Box into its current management and build systems. It's currently only in the incubator phase, but the the full proposal for Apache Wave reads like a serious, concerted effort. There are a ton of Googlers on the list of code committers, at any rate.
If all goes to plan, you may soon be able to easily set up your very own Wave server, for internal collaboration efforts. Who knows, maybe big-name email and instant messaging providers like Microsoft, Yahoo and Google will one day provide an end point for our waves!Google Wave looks set to be rescued by Apache originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST. Google Groups receives an almighty restyle and rebirth
Still, who cares -- Groups looks so much better now.Google Groups receives an almighty restyle and rebirth originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 11:30:00 EST.

Message Continuity quietly replicates Exchange data to Google Apps
Message Continuity replicates your Echange users' mail, calendar entries, and contacts -- but tasks are not supported at the moment. The tool is based upon Postini, which Google acquired in 2007, and it certainly looks like a slick way to ensure you're always prepared for a mail-related disaster.

UberTwitter beta arrives on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
UberTwitter, other than being a very polished app, only really has one unique feature: UberView (please forgive my continuing lack of umlauts). UberView, with a quick flick of the phone into landscape orientation, shows you a preview of links contained in tweets -- handy for when you don't want to open up a browser, or indeed expose your iDevice to potentially malicious websites.
Other than that, UberTwitter for iOS provides the usual slew of Twitter miscellany: tweet pictures, add your location, change your avatar, send Direct Messages (!!!) and more.

PlayStation Phone runs Neocore -- poorly -- on video
The guys over at Engadget just got their hands on a video showing off the Sony PlayStation Phone (aka the Zeus, Z1) running benchmark program Neocore. As you can see above, it didn't fare so well, but keep in mind that this is prototype hardware and software. Sony seems to want gaming to be a main focus of the phone, so we fully expect the GPU to blow away benchmarks once the phone is finally released. Suffice to say, yes, it will run Angry Birds. Click past the break to see the video in action. [Engadget]
