Microsoft scores 120,000 USDA users in massive cloud win

Microsoft (and just about every other big computing company) is bullish on the cloud, and the Redmond company announced a massive migration win yesterday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be moving around 120,000 users to Microsoft Online Services.

It's a nice feather in the cap of Microsoft, which only earlier this month received its Authorization to Operate from the Fed. Microsoft V.P. Curt Kolcun believes the USDA deal will get the ball rolling, saying "Nearly every federal agency trusts their productivity needs to Microsoft Office, Exchange, and SharePoint today." He continued, "From a momentum perspective, I think this announcement is going to be a phenomenal catalyst to drive more interest from the federal CIO community to think about moving their full messaging suite applications to the cloud with Microsoft."

... And so the battle for the cloud continues. Your move, Google!Microsoft scores 120,000 USDA users in massive cloud win originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Opera Mobile will support Flash and HTML5 video... soon

Speaking frankly and quite technically, Pavel Studený of the Opera Mobile team has posted some info about its Android development experience. The post itself is pretty thin on details, except for two gems: both Flash and HTML5 video are coming to Opera Mobile.

The interesting thing is, Pavel doesn't say that Flash and HTML5 support are only coming to Android; in fact, he says "if you have Flash player installed on your phone, Opera will support it." Now, it's not like Flash actually runs on many mobile phones, but it still leaves some interesting possibilities open -- will it support Flash Lite for Symbian, for example? For now, though, only Android 2.1 and newer has access to an official Flash player. HTML5 video support, on the other hand, is far less exciting -- in fact, most mobile browsers, including the upcoming Firefox for Mobile, already support it. Opera Mobile is actually playing catch-up in that regard.

Beyond the Flash and HTML5 news, Pavel talks about the trials and tribulations of writing apps for Android. Unlike Symbian, the operating system behind Nokia phones, Android is very young, very fresh, and prone to rapid changes that developers sometimes struggle to stay on top of. The trade-off, of course, is that Android is accruing exciting features, and thus apps and users, at break-neck speeds.Opera Mobile will support Flash and HTML5 video... soon originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 06:30:00 EST. Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows

There's really no question what the most popular, free antivirus program for Windows is here at Download Squad. You, our readers, make it pretty clear whenever we post about the topic that Microsoft Security Essentials is at the top of the heap -- and we tend to agree. With detection rates every bit as good as some competing paid products (and better than many), MSE might just be the best piece of free software Microsoft has ever released.

And it's just gotten better, with the official arrival of Security Essentials 2. The upgrade adds several key improvements, not the least of which is a heuristic scanning engine. One of the big knocks against its predecessor was that MSE's protection relied too heavily upon definitions -- and in today's ever-changing threat landscape, definitions just aren't enough. Still, I never had a single machine at home become infected while running MSE 1, so now that version 2 includes heuristic kung-fu I'm even less concerned about the safety of my Windows PCs.

MSE 2 also offers improved defense by better integrating with existing Windows features. The updated app adds muscle to the Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer to offer increased protection against network and Web-based threats. There's also a new network inspection feature which uses the Windows Filtering Platform in Vista and Windows 7 -- XP users won't benefit from this feature, obviously.

If you're already running MSE, check your update tab for an upgrade notification -- your system tray icon may also be orange if the update is available. You can also download Security Essentials 2 manually from this page and install over the old version.Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 07:30:00 EST. Ubuntu One app for iOS now supports AirPlay streaming

The interface may still be a bit spartan, but the Ubuntu One app for iOS has added an important new feature in its latest update. If you're running iOS 4.2 you can now take advantage of AirPlay to pump tunes to compatible devices like an Apple TV box. At last you can blast your cloud-synced tunes out of the home theater system as you wander around the house, controlling playback from your pocketable touchscreen!

Canonical reminds users that the Ubuntu One app will stream all your music -- not just tracks purchased through their store. While the app is free, a $3.99 per month mobile subscription is required to use the app.

Does the Netbook Have a Life?

Trends have always come and gone, but when it comes to all-things-tech, the speed of change is faster than an Internet minute. It isn't that tech users are all that fickle; it's that the environment around them is constantly changing. Take the "smartphones vs. laptops war" for example. It isn't that either won; rather, the war left the battlefield.

Use the old Windows XP screensavers, including Aquarium, with Windows Vista and 7

Ah, Windows Dancer, how fondly I remember thee. How you would bump, jive and gyrate across my screen! Mr Clippy was mere nothingness when compared to you. And Aquarium! A three-dimensional fish tank... on my screen! I still remember the first time I showed my mother. She actually reached out to touch the fish; I had to slap her hand to remind her that it was only an illusion.

With Windows Vista, these XP gems were summarily broken. Most of us didn't realize, as we were too busy dealing with Vista's despicable, retentive ineptitude, but now that we're onto Windows 7... well, wouldn't it be nice to relive some of those nice Windows XP experiences?

One clever guy on the WinMatrix forums (back in 2009, it must be said) has ported the Windows XP screensavers to work with Vista and 7. Unfortunately, Windows Dancer has been removed for copyright reasons, but the Original Screensavers pack (including Aquarium) is still available! Once you've unzipped it, you should have an EXE called MCE2005Screensavers.exe. I chose to unzip that file (using 7-Zip), as I don't like running EXEs, but many people have attested that the file is free of viruses.

You should then have a directory full of screensaver (.SCR) files. Right click your favorite and Install. It seemed a little buggy, with some screensavers requiring multiple Installs before they finally worked. But as you can see above, the Aquarium definitely works on Windows 7.Use the old Windows XP screensavers, including Aquarium, with Windows Vista and 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 11:10:00 EST. Panelize fixes one of Chrome OS's fundamental flaws

If you haven't played with Chrome OS yet, it has one fundamental niggle that harkens back to the DOS days of yore: windows don't exist, and it has no way of displaying multiple tabs on screen at the same time. This means if you want to refer to a document while you compose an email, you need to repetitively switch between tabs -- and I think we can all agree that tab-switching is one of the most important omissions from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Chrome OS does support one way of displaying multiple Web pages at the same time, however: panels. If you've looked through our Chromium OS galleries (or taken a quick look at the screenshot above) you'll notice some always-on-top panels across the bottom of the screen. Panels are handy things -- capable of being resized, or quickly popped down out of view. By default, the download manager, popped-out Gmail chat windows and the media player display in panels -- but, for some reason, there's no way to load custom websites in panels.

Which brings us onto our very first Chrome OS-specific extension: Panelize. With Panelize you can put anything into a panel, such as Gmail, Reader, or even Download Squad. In one fell swoop, having to switch between tabs is a thing of the past!Continue reading Panelize fixes one of Chrome OS's fundamental flawsPanelize fixes one of Chrome OS's fundamental flaws originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 12 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. Google's YouTube uploads confirm Chrome OS, Web Store launch today

It's no secret Google has a big announcement scheduled for 10:30 Pacific time today, and we already nearly certain that they would announce two major launches: Chrome OS and the Chrome Web Store. If there was any doubt left in your mind, the Google OS blog has snagged a handful of additional evidence.

The official Google Chrome YouTube channel has been busy in the wee hours, uploading two new demo videos -- one for Chrome OS and one for the Web Store. The videos aren't publicly available just yet, so you'll have to let the trio of static images whet your appetite for now (take the jump for the other two captures).

For now, you may commence thumb-twiddling... or, you know, do something productive instead. If anyone had doubts that Richard Stallman dislikes Google's new Chrome OS, he laid them to rest in an interview with the Guardian Tuesday. New York Times Chrome Web app hands-on: jaw-droppingly awesome

Truth be told, I've never been sold on the whole Web apps paradigm. They're just websites! Very pretty websites, but ultimately... just websites. But it seems I was missing the point: while they're websites to you and I, publishers and developers see them as something else entirely. They see Web apps as beautiful, standardized, cross-platform tools for dissemination of their content and, of course, monetization. It's hard to sell a website, but a Web app on the other hand...

Take a look at the New York Times Web app, which I've just had the immense pleasure of playing around with. Notice how I gave you a Chrome Web Store link, but I could just as easily tell you to visit http://www.nytimes.com/chrome/# in Firefox 4 and it still works. Heck, it works in Firefox 3, too.

Don't let the 'oooh, Web app!!' distract you from the real gems, though. The layout is nothing like the website, and that's a good thing. Never has it been easier to switch between categories quickly -- seriously, the Web app blows the website out of the water, as far as content discovery goes. Then, there's the keyboard shortcuts, with the arrow keys allowing you to whisk through pages and stories with incredible ease.

Finally, and perhaps the best example of why Web apps are the wave of the future: visit the Web app's URL on your iPad. The experience is better than the actual iPad app. Even swiping works! (There are some iPad screenshots in the gallery below, too.)

Anyway, the best way to get to grips with the New York Times Web app is to play around with it yourself. If you don't have time, or if you're afraid of missing the good bits, have a look through our hands-on gallery below (again, make sure you view the images 'full size'). My initial impressions are excellent -- but the app is far from perfect. More analysis after the break.

Pre-launch Chrome OS hands-on; analysis and screenshots

Tomorrow, December 7, Google is expected to launch its new netbook-and-tablet cloud-based operating system, Chrome OS. It's also entirely possible that Google will simply show off the much-hyped Chrome Web Store. The event was only announced December 3, and it's extremely unlikely that Google would rush the launch of something huge and consumer-facing.

Even if Chrome OS is shown off tomorrow, it's could be a matter of weeks ormonths until you get your hands on a Chrome OS netbook (or smartbook). That's why we've created a new gallery which showcases the new OS and walks you through all of the new features. Just so it's clear: this is Chromium OS, Chrome OS's open source brother. I've been told by a couple of Googlers that the public and private repositories aren't very different, however.

Some important bits are still missing -- most obviously Cloud Print -- and a lot of key features still remain hidden behind the about:flags barricade. Fundamental features such as the media player and support for USB and SD card storage are still considered 'experimental'. In fact, while the browser itself is as excellent as always, most of the OS-specific bits seem to be a bit flaky.

In the gallery, I've tried to highlight bits that we haven't shown before, such as the keyboard overlays and user management. Note that the docking Gmail chat manager is back, but that Picasa integration is still ominously missing. The coolest bit is that Chromium OS, like its browser brother, now seems to have developer and beta channels -- but it isn't functional yet.

Once you've browsed through it, you'll likely reach the same conclusion as me: Unless Google has held back a lot of non-public code, Chrome OS simply isn't ready for launch. Tomorrow will almost certainly be a demonstration of an internal build of Chrome OS, or just the launch of the Web Store.Continue reading Pre-launch Chrome OS hands-on; analysis and screenshotsPre-launch Chrome OS hands-on; analysis and screenshots originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack

Sure, it's fun to post comments on websites and converse with your fellow readers, but there's always a little danger involved. Why? Because sometimes the sites where you post those comments rile up the wrong people and wind up with a big security breach -- like the one at Gawker.

One of the biggest lessons to be learned from the Gawker fiasco is this: don't use the same password everywhere.

But remembering all those different passwords is hard, yo!

Yes, it is -- but there are secure tools you can use which make it so you don't have to do the remembering yourself. Apps like LastPass, OnePassword, and KeePass make creating and utilizing complex, secure passwords a trivial task. All you need to do is pick an app, create an account, and set up one really good password you can remember to protect it. Your password manager will take care of the memorizing.

Take the jump to see how easy it can be to better protect your logins online!Continue reading Three password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hackThree password apps to protect yourself from trouble like the Gawker database hack originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. No Spotify in the U.S. this year, label deals still up in the air

Spotify is an excellent music service. At least, it appears to be, based on what our friends in Europe tell us. North American resident, of course, are still geo-blocked from using Spotify -- though we had been promised a U.S. launch in 2010. With just under four weeks left in the year, it looks like the reports we heard in October weren't totally accurate.

In truth, Spotify is not close to closing deals with U.S. record labels. Apple was thought to be protracting Spotify's problems by playing on record industry fears of falling profits and painting the service in a bad light. Spotify has nearly 750,000 subscribers each paying $10 per month for the service, though, and the global online music biz is worth anywhere between $15 and $40 billion U.S. -- so it's unlikely that the labels won't get on board eventually. Even if profits from Spotify are comparatively small, they're better than any income when a potential listener grabs a P2P share instead of firing up a streaming app like Spotify.

When is this going to happen? Spotify CEO Daniel Ek could only say "We are definitely going to do the U.S., you'll see." But added, "I can't commit to a specific date."No Spotify in the U.S. this year, label deals still up in the air originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 10:30:00 EST. Send hilarious, personalized Santa messages with Google Voice

Ho ho ho! I remember, when I was 8, Santa called my father's mobile phone. He had a message for me, and it blew my mind. A few years later, my dad told me it was his best friend, and he had bought a new SIM card just so I couldn't trace the number! Ah, the lengths adults go to preserve the magic of Santa Claus.

Today, things just got a whole lot easier. If you want to create a personalized message for a (younger) special someone, there's the Google Voice-powered Send A Personalized Call From Santa. There are hundreds of options to choose from -- more than enough to convince the recipient that it's a message just for them -- and most of them are hilarious. Once you're done, you can send it as a phone call (in the US only, alas), by email, or simply grab a URL.

Check out my message from Santa if you want to hear a sample of what this piece of awesomeness can produce. I love how it correctly synthesizes my name.

If you don't have someone to send a Santa message to, please give the link to any friends and family that do have children. Google Groups receives an almighty restyle and rebirth

With nary a muffled fanfare and eclipsed by Google's other massive releases over the past two days, Google Groups has been significantly revamped. In true, modern-day Google style, it now looks almost... pretty. It's only the first step of an overhaul, too -- there's more to come, including improved spam control, moderation and search features.

Google has focused on the discussions aspect of Groups first -- so while finding new groups and creating new topics has a shiny new UI, you will have to return to the old interface to perform administrative tasks. Check the New Groups vs. Old Groups page for more info.

As TechCrunch's Siegler mentions, the new style feels more than a little like Wave. With Wave's retirement, the redistribution of its team members, and Google's re-use of JavaScript libraries (and thus UI elements), it's safe to assume that some of Wave might have ended up in Groups. Track Santa on Google Maps and Earth as he delivers gifts around the world

NORAD, the military wing in charge of defending North America from maritime and aerospace attacks, seems to have a lot of spare time on its hands. Since 1955 NORAD has tracked Santa Claus as he travels around the world delivering presents -- and since 2007, Google has also been part of the project, integrating NORAD's data with Google Maps and Earth.

Basically, once Santa gets on the move -- around 2am EST on December 24 -- you can follow his movements, either in 2D or 3D, on your computer or your phone, and with Google Maps or Google Earth; just search for 'santa'. For the truly festive, there's even a NORAD Twitter account, which will presumably tweet Santa's current location in real time!

After the break, there's a video of what the experience looked like last year. I imagine it will look much the same this year, unless Santa has updated his GPS navigation hardware. Google Cloud Print is now available

With the first Chrome OS release due to be unveiled by Google later today, this really shouldn't come as a surprise: Cloud Print is now fully active. You will need the latest Chrome Developer version installed. Head to your Google Chrome about:flags page and enable the Cloud Print Proxy, and you'll be instantly plugged in.

Your Cloud Print queue manager will display all the printers you've got installed on your computer, along with any active and recently completed print jobs. When you hover over a printer, a drop-down appears which enables you to share or delete the printer from Cloud Print.

We'll have more on Cloud Print, Chrome OS, and the Web Store later on -- Google news will be breaking all day.Continue reading Google Cloud Print is now availableGoogle Cloud Print is now available originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 10:05:00 EST. Firefox 4 Awesome Bar gets a bit of Googleesque 'Instant' magic

Muddying the waters with yet another 'Instant' product, and with only one letter differentiating it from one of Google's new features, Mozilla Labs has just launched the next step in the Prospector experiment: Instant Preview. Now, as you scroll through possible results in your Awesome Bar, the target page will begin to load. Instead of having to guess if it's the right page, you'll be able to glance down and check... instantly!

Mozilla Labs points out that you can also use it for 'temporal' information, such as weather and stocks news, or a Web comic. Type the first two letters of your favorite comic into the Awesome Bar, and the comic automatically loads. Read it, then simply press Esc and the Web page you were looking at before instantly re-appears.

Of course, you could use the same technique to check Download Squad regularly, too.

War and Revolution

2011 is looking to be a relatively violent year when it comes to technology and technology companies. As I write this, there are folks calling the attacks by Wikileaks supporters a cyberwar, but I think it is more of a cyber-revolt, and the difference is important. That difference is highlighted by the now declared war between Oracle and HP.

Google Chrome Canary hits v10, Crankshaft turbocharges V8 JavaScript engine

With all the Chrome OS and Chrome Web Store hoopla today, a post over at the Chromium blog went mostly unnoticed -- and it's definitely noteworthy. Freshly baked in the Chromium snapshot builds and Google Chrome Canary is Crankshaft, an enhancement to Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine that has yielded some impressive gains.

Crankshaft is made up of four components:

a runtime profiler for identifying code that uses a significant number of CPU cycles
a base compiler for generating code more quickly
an optimizing compiler which re-compiles code pinpointed by the profiler
deoptimization mechanism that allows Crankshaft to recover from overly-optimistic code optimizations

Crankshaft offers improvements in both startup time and maximum performance, with Google noting gains of up to 12% on JavaScript-heavy pages. On Google's own V8 benchmark, Crankshaft helps Chrome post scores which are almost 50% higher than previous versions with V8 alone.

...And for those of you wondering when Chrome was going to hit version ten, you've got your answer. It's already happened to the Canary build -- so hit your wrench menu > About Google Chrome and restart to update yourself to Chrome X! There's not much new that you'll notice right off the bat, with the exception of a selectable Instant option and experimental geolocation features in about:flags.Google Chrome Canary hits v10, Crankshaft turbocharges V8 JavaScript engine originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 20:46:00 EST. In addition to the familiar menu-based app launcher, aDeskbar also includes nice features like drawers (similar to OS X stacks) and widgets for quick actions like invoking a terminal, logging off, or shutting down your system. Scott's Gmail Alert hits version 5, adds more Google notification goodness

Scott's Gmail Alert (SGA) has been a great desktop notifier for a long time. In the just-released version 5, however, SGA has added a handful of new features which make it even better than its predecessors.

SGA 5 can also notify you of upcoming events from a Google Calendar (even password-protected ones), changes in your local weather forecast, and new messages sent to you via Google Talk. As before, you can set SGA as your default Windows mail client and send quick HTML replies without even launching your browser.

Only want SGA to notify you during working hours? There's a setting for that -- just specify the start and stop time, and the app will snooze when you no longer want it active. SGA 5 is packed with customization options, and you can even tell it to handle the heavy lifting, hide in the background, and pass actual notification duties on to Growl for Windows if you like.

The free version allows you to monitor a single Google account. An unlimited number of accounts is supported by the pro version -- and before you pshaw, it's only three bucks.Scott's Gmail Alert hits version 5, adds more Google notification goodness originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. The first alpha release of Ubuntu 11, dubbed Natty Narwhal, has just been released. It is classed as a "developer snapshot," and is provided more as a sneak preview of what's to come in Ubuntu 11. Regular users of Ubuntu 10 should not upgrade.

Along with the usual package updates and an updated kernel (2.6.37), Ubuntu 11 will also ship with Firefox 4. The alpha build includes Firefox 4 beta 7, and it will be upgraded with newer builds as they become available. The other big change is that the Unity desktop environment now enabled by default, replacing GNOME. You can still switch back to another desktop environment, if you don't like Unity (but looking at the screenshot above, how can you not like it?)

Ask DLS: Android antivirus, scanner issues and video games

Every morning, as Lee empties the mail bag onto my desk, we pore through cries of help that range from the utterly banal -- "how do i install iTuns???" -- through to truly taxing technical teasers. The fact is, though, no matter how simple the question is, how blatant the answer might be -- "google it!" -- we try to answer them. After all, a problem is a problem. If something prevents you from using your computer, it doesn't matter how complex it is to fix, you just want it to work!

It's been a long time since our last Ask DLS, but hopefully this is the beginning of a regular, recurring feature. You may also see a return of Tell DLS -- but for the time being, if you have any technical questions, use our feedback form.

To begin, here are three recent questions and answers.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and the Nexus S announced by Google

Google, just moments ago, launched the next iteration of the Android and Nexus product lines: Gingerbread and the Nexus S. The Nexus S, with a 4" Contour Display, two cameras, 16GB of memory and Near Field Communication, is jaw-dropping. But let's not get distracted by shiny things; as software nerds, it is Android 2.3, Gingerbread, that really interests us.

If you're feeling brave, dive right into the Android 2.3 Platform Highlights. It's aimed at developers, but most of the main features are spelled out in plain English. Here's a taster:

Faster, more intuitive text input -- the default keyboard has been significantly improved, and multi-touch 'key-chording' means faster input
UI refinements for simplicity and speed -- the UI has been simplified, with menus and settings now easier to find. It looks like the whole thing will be quite bold and 'primary colored'
One-touch word selection and copy/paste -- this one's quite hard to explain, better to look at the two pictures
Improved power management -- apps will be automatically closed if they steal a lot of CPU time, and users can now see at a glance which phone components and apps are taking up the most power
More ways to communicate -- Internet calling (VoIP/SIP), Near Field Communication and video calling with the front-facing camera are now possible

There's lots of other low-level changes, but I won't bore you with them. It's safe to say that, as I write this, app developers the world over are drooling on their hairy feet. To put it another way, that Sony PlayStation phone that you've seen on Engadget -- it's only possible because of some big changes in Android 2.3's architecture.

With regards to availability, Gingerbread will be open-sourced in the next few weeks. The Nexus S will be available to buy in the US from December 16, and in the UK from the 20th.

There are videos of the phone itself, and some developers getting their nerd on, after the break.Continue reading Android 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and the Nexus S announced by GoogleAndroid 2.3 Gingerbread SDK and the Nexus S announced by Google originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 11:40:00 EST. A look at Grooveshark's massive HTML5 makeover

Grooveshark is somewhat of a house favorite here at Downloadsquad. It's one of the few music sites which isn't georestricted, which means Sebastian, Erez, Vlad, Sam and I can all enjoy the same music as our teammates in the U.S. This morning, I woke up to find a completely overhauled Grooveshark interface and there's one change which trumps all the visual tinkering: it's not built with Flash. The interface, at least, is pure HTML5 -- actual audio playback is still handled by the Flash plug-in.

This is Grooveshark's second big overhaul in three months. Erez walked you through the previous update back in September, and pretty much everything has now been changed.

3-way hardware accelerated browser rematch: Internet Explorer 9 finally on top (video)

Earlier this year, in June, I ran the first of my side-by-side deathmatches to try and work out which, if any, of the browsers is truly the hardware accelerated king. As it turned out, Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9 were pretty equally balanced. Just two months later, in August, Chrome had stolen the top spot and sent Firefox 4, in a fit of tears, to the bottom of the heap.

In the last five months, all three browsers have been maturing. Chrome has leapfrogged from version 7 to 9, Firefox has been working frantically on its JavaScript engine to catch Chrome, and Internet Explorer 9 has been quietly -- but confidently -- working behind the scenes on the entire package. The emergence of new features has all but ceased: all three vendors are now readying themselves for an epic market share battle at the start of 2011.

The good news is, at least for the users, is that all three browsers are very fast. All three browsers have significantly improved since August, both in speed and standards-compliance, and it's now clear that you'll enjoy the Web no matter your browser. The only real question mark hovers over Opera -- version 11 is meant to be hardware accelerated, but until we actually see it, who knows.

In this new deathmatch, there is no run-away winner. Firefox 4 certainly looks like the slowest of the three, and Chrome -- dirty, pulls-no-punches Chrome -- is definitely faster, but I still don't think it matches the shiny, smooth slickness of Microsoft's newest browser. Internet Explorer 9, if you watch its side-by-side performance and figure in its excellent results from other benchmarks, must surely be the current king of HTML5-enabled, hardware-accelerated browsers.Continue reading 3-way hardware accelerated browser rematch: Internet Explorer 9 finally on top (video)3-way hardware accelerated browser rematch: Internet Explorer 9 finally on top (video) originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. The Google Nexus S shows off the new Maps app

We saw Andy Rubin showing off the new Google Maps application on the mystery Motorola Honeycomb tablet on Monday, now we get to see Google showing it off on the upcoming Nexus S.  While it's a render, the 3D buildings and smooth scrolling look great, and it's something we're all looking forward to getting our hands on.  And let's be honest, the way the video was embedded into a frame of Nexus S goodness, well that's just plain cool.  Be sure to hit the source link and see for yourself, and we have the video itself after the break. Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects

With the release of OpenKinect, an open-source library that lets PC users interact with Microsoft's depth-sensing and environment-recognizing Kinect, crazy-cool applications of the technology are beginning to emerge. In this video (embedded after the break), one creative hacker mashes together a bunch of open-source libraries to create... well, a modern-day equivalent of HAL 9000.

Using OpenKinect as an interface, OpenCV to process the captured images, CMU Sphinx to recognize speech and Festvox to synthesize speech, one hacker was able to create a program that recognizes random real-world objects and communicates with a user in real time. He notes in the video's description that it's just a 'proof of concept', but one wonders how long it actually took him to cobble it together because the video was uploaded only a few days after OpenKinect's release.

The most exciting prospect though, in my opinion, is that Microsoft must surely be working on their own in-house tools (and games!) to better utilize Kinect's potential. The cocky work of lone cowboy coders is one thing, but next-generation interfaces from powerhouses like Microsoft are something else.Continue reading Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objectsHacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. Google Wave looks set to be rescued by Apache

The Apache Software Foundation, that is, not an ominously portentous, Wagner-blaring helicopter.

The beleaguered Wave project, which Google has ceased developing, will soon shut down. Last week, Google gave us the ability to export our existing waves as Zip files, and now, thanks to Apache and the Wave in a Box off-shoot, you may soon have somewhere to import them to. It won't be exactly the same as Google Wave, but it could be pretty damn close.

The Register is reporting that the Apache Software Group is looking to roll Wave in a Box into its current management and build systems. It's currently only in the incubator phase, but the the full proposal for Apache Wave reads like a serious, concerted effort. There are a ton of Googlers on the list of code committers, at any rate.

If all goes to plan, you may soon be able to easily set up your very own Wave server, for internal collaboration efforts. Who knows, maybe big-name email and instant messaging providers like Microsoft, Yahoo and Google will one day provide an end point for our waves!Google Wave looks set to be rescued by Apache originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 07:30:00 EST.

Still, who cares -- Groups looks so much better now.Google Groups receives an almighty restyle and rebirth originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 11:30:00 EST. 'Tis the Season for Rolling Releases

Ah, the holiday season. Children may have visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads, but here in the Linux blogosphere, it's been something a bit different. Rolling releases, that is. Yes, there must be something about this time of year that has made tongues more likely to wag and Linux bloggers more likely to think about daily updates.

Message Continuity quietly replicates Exchange data to Google Apps

Are you administering an Exchange server at work? Constantly fretting over the possibility of unplanned downtime leading to a user revolt? Google's offering a new tool which could save your bacon. It's called Message Continuity, and it provides you with a Gmail fallback option should you experience an Exchange outage.
Message Continuity replicates your Echange users' mail, calendar entries, and contacts -- but tasks are not supported at the moment. The tool is based upon Postini, which Google acquired in 2007, and it certainly looks like a slick way to ensure you're always prepared for a mail-related disaster.

UberTwitter beta arrives on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

UberTwitter, the definitive BlackBerry Twitter app, has finally made the leap to iOS. The app bears the beta moniker, but Engadget seems to think that the final release will be as soon as December.

UberTwitter, other than being a very polished app, only really has one unique feature: UberView (please forgive my continuing lack of umlauts). UberView, with a quick flick of the phone into landscape orientation, shows you a preview of links contained in tweets -- handy for when you don't want to open up a browser, or indeed expose your iDevice to potentially malicious websites.

Other than that, UberTwitter for iOS provides the usual slew of Twitter miscellany: tweet pictures, add your location, change your avatar, send Direct Messages (!!!) and more.

PlayStation Phone runs Neocore -- poorly -- on video

The guys over at Engadget just got their hands on a video showing off the Sony PlayStation Phone (aka the Zeus, Z1) running benchmark program Neocore. As you can see above, it didn't fare so well, but keep in mind that this is prototype hardware and software. Sony seems to want gaming to be a main focus of the phone, so we fully expect the GPU to blow away benchmarks once the phone is finally released. Suffice to say, yes, it will run Angry Birds. Click past the break to see the video in action. [Engadget]

LG says Optimus One line will get Gingerbread, now quit asking

This is why carriers and manufacturers don't often say if and when an update is coming. LG first said on Facebook that an update to Gingerbread couldn't happen for its Optimus One line of Android smartphones (that includes the Optimus S, T, LG Vortex and any other alphabetical variants in the U.S.). Later, on its website, it said that was wrong, and it'd have to consider an update. And now, again on its website again it's saying the Optimus One line indeed will be updated.LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue. Some phones will get official updates. Some won't. There will be much gnashing of teeth. But given that Gingerbread is officially all of four days old -- and only the SDK has been released, not source code for the manufacturers -- a little patience wouldn't kill anybody, would it?Yes, some HTC phones will be updated. Yes, some Samsung phones (probably) will be updated. Yes some Motorola phones will be updated. And we'll have new phones that are released between now and then. It's the circle of life, people. Chrome To Phone gets a small update

I guess the folks at Google decided it was time to update a lot of things today, all of which is likely minor preparations for Gingerbread. Either way, we'll take em. If you're making use of Chrome to phone you'll want to be sure you get that updated to the latest release made available. The change log is that of a short one, and notes the addition of a history tab for links previously sent to your device which can be sorted. While there is likely other bug fixes here, nothing major that Google felt the need to point out.
